I have noticed many individuals tend to pick words that will influence the coming year and usually announce this New Years Day.
This concept was the German tradition, Wort des Jahres was started in 1971. The American Dialect Society‘s Word of the Year is the oldest English-language version, and the only one that is announced after the end of the calendar year, determined by a vote of independent linguists, and not tied to commercial interest .
This year, 2019, was the first year I decided to select a word of the year. I noticed one word in particular stand out the most in the months leading up to January 2019. In 2018 I went on a journey of finding myself again and I noticed that perfectionism was not allowing me to be who I truly am.
While reading the book Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living ; I noticed a word that really spoke to what I needed instead of perfection. I also noticed the word start to creep up in many forums of my life. I found quotes that I was drawn to and had discussions that all led to the one word I wanted to focus on.
That word was Grace. Grace to me does not just mean something spiritual or divine, but grace to myself. Treating myself with love and understanding instead of judgement. And this was a concept I felt that the year 2019 was all about.
As a helpful reminder my sister suggested a bracelet from MudLOVE. They are a great company and you can customize your bracelet. What a neat and cute reminder.
If you have a word of the year be sure to share.
