2021 Word Of The Year

2021 Word Of The Year

It’s that time of year again where I select a word to focus on for the year to come, but first I would like to reflect on my word for 2020 which was Present.

As 2020 comes to a close it is important to recognize all that we, as a global community, have had to navigate this year. March 2020 in the US we were encouraged to quarantine to flatten the curve on the coronavirus. We hoped for a short quarantine, but that was not in the cards as our numbers continue to climb even now. 2020 has been both incredibly difficult and life-changing as we navigated through social isolation, illness, civil unrest, hard truths, changes, and growth.

When I selected my word for the year I had no idea the focus it would require to remain here in the moment. It is so easy to slip back into old habits when we are feeling uncertain, but focusing on being in the moment as much as possible allowed me to feel the unrest. I can’t say I was always present, but the reminder on my bracelet allowed me to recalibrate and focus on being in the moment. Being present allowed me to reconnect with my body and myself this year, which was a blessing during these difficult times.

I am looking forward to 2021 as I continue to grow and connect with myself. I am confident that my word for 2021 will guide me as well as present guided me this year. My word for 2021 is centered.

I believe the right word finds you when you need it most. In October I was debating on my word for 2021 and I thought I had settled on the word balance, but it didn’t feel quite right. I was watching the Rachel Hollis Show on Quibi when she said something profound about work-life balance “I don’t think the goal is ever to be balanced, I think the goal is to be centered.” She reminded me that life is not a balancing act, and the idea of the work-life balance plays into perfectionism. Work-life balance is not achievable because we, as humans, cannot balance extremes, but we can be centered in them. I know that I require being centered for my next chapter and I am looking forward to this coming year and what 2021 will bring.

If you have a word for 2020 wearing it daily can be a great way to remind yourself this coming year. Mudlove is a great option for custom bracelets and it’s what I used for 2019. For this coming year, I got a bracelet from Etsy. I hope you are able to find an inspiring word for 2021 and if you have be sure to share it.
